Step 1 · The question
What you actually need to know.
Market research, direct marketing done properly, management consultancy, and communication.
Research asks in order to understand. That means the answers are not used to sell to the person who gave them, the contacts are not resold as prospect files, and anonymity promised to a respondent is kept rather than quietly treated as a formality. Respondents are told who is behind the research and what happens to their answers. Incentives, where offered, are disclosed and never conditional on giving a particular answer.
What you actually need to know.
Sample, method, and its limits.
With respondents properly informed.
What it produced, not what was hoped.
Consent, or the exception, identified.
Opt-out list, before any call.
Sender identified, exit offered.
Applied at once, every channel.
When work genuinely is direct marketing, we call it that and do it properly. Consumer calling lists get screened against the national opt-out list before anyone is telephoned, because failing to screen is an infringement rather than a lapse. Automated calling and fax need prior consent. Email to individuals needs consent, subject to the narrow existing-customer exception, and every message identifies the sender and offers a free way out.
Twenty-seven years of this work mostly teaches you which findings survive contact with a decision. We advise on business and management questions, and where a decision rests on something we have not established, we say that rather than filling the gap with confidence. It is commercial advice, not legal, accounting or tax advice, and we will tell you when a question belongs with the professional qualified for it.
What actually has to be decided.
What is known, and what is not.
Named rather than papered over.
Written, with its limits.
What can be supported.
Who needs to believe it.
Earned or paid, named.
What ran, honestly.
Communication work follows the same instinct as the research side. Paid promotion presented as editorial has to be identifiable as paid, and nobody here will pose as a consumer or have anyone else do so. Those are not house preferences, they are prohibited practices. What is left is working out what can honestly be claimed and saying it clearly, which is harder and considerably more durable than the alternative.
